    After a retreat to the atmospheric and spectral Loft and Retribution that reinforce Kiyoshi Kurosawa's reputation as a horror filmmaker, Tokyo Sonata continues in the vein of his idiosyncratically personal (and arguably, more interesting), yet equally unsettling films that began with Bright Future. As the film begins, the family patriarch, middle-aged senior administrative manager, Ryuhei (Teruyuki Kagawa) has been notified that the company has outsourced his job to China (where his salary would pay for three language-fluent office workers) and, without portable skills that could be applied to another department, will be immediately laid off from work. Reluctant to tell his family for fear of undermining his authority, Ryuhei continues the pretext of leaving for work with his briefcase each morning, spending his days alternately lining up at a job placement office and a charity lunch service on the park. Meanwhile, his stay-at-home wife, Megumi (Kyoko Koizumi), has begun to feel trapped in her unappreciated role of keeping the household together, her newly obtained driver's license symbolizing her liberated, if guilty step away from the familiar routines of domestic life (a search for identity implied by her intended use of the license as a form of identification). Their university-aged son, Takashi (Yu Koyanagi) is similarly adrift in his part-time job distributing flyers on the streets, and sees a provision for foreigners enlisting in the U.S. military as a means of asserting his independence. Younger son, Kenji (Kai Inowaki), having been caught passing a manga book in the classroom, stages his own minor rebellion: exposing the teacher's own penchant for reading erotic themed manga on the train, and subsequently, taking piano lessons against his father's objection. Inspired by the four-movement structure of a sonata, Tokyo Sonata is a humorous and incisive modernist (and globalist) evocation of the shomin-geki salaryman picture popularized by Yasujiro Ozu, chronicling the increasingly divergent lives of the Sasaki family who, like the families in Ozu's cinema are on the verge of disintegration. However, while both filmmakers reflect the inevitability of this dissolution, Kurosawa paradoxically sees the rupture as a necessary trauma towards rebuilding - a sense of renewal that is reflected in the parting image of the family leaving the stage, figuratively stepping away from the performance to forge their own path in the uncertain darkness.

    Why should I be surprised this is so good? The guy had already made the influential and original, Flower and Snake, the sensational nunsploitation; Cloistered Nun: Runa's Confession and the sublime, Wife to be Sacrificed and certainly does not disappoint here. Beautifully shot and framed, this is a visual treat from beginning to end. Naomi Tani is as good as ever but the other two protagonists are equally effective and for once the male lead is not some cringing bastard. Quite breathtaking sequences of consensual and non consensual sexual activity and most effective use of colour shape and form with flashbacks but always keeping the eventful tale moving forward. For what would appear to be such a mundane genre, such care and attention to detail is most impressive and should be appreciated by all who chance upon this erotic gem.

    An artist is painting his girlfriend Tomie (Miki Sakai), but she dismisses it as a poor painting and he kills her in a jealous rage with an art knife and his two friends help him bury her. When the three friends are a party Tomie shows up and the artist kills himself in the bathroom. Tomie latches onto his friend and his mother kills Tomie and they cut her up together in an unnatural ecstasy. They then burn her head, which has already started to regenerate and has some crude limbs for locomotion. The portrait of Tomie allows for her regeneration, as her supernatural blood mixed with the pigments. The friend's girlfriend becomes possessed by Tomie, in a rather viral fashion. In a fit of jealousy, the two Tomies try to eliminate the other. The girl doesn't want to become a monster, and so they decide to commit suicide. However, when at a waterfall, about to commit suicide, Tomie's head grows on the side of the girl's neck next to her head. They all die and then the sister of the friend comes and throws flowers into the water. A small facial mole can be seen directly beneath the sister's left eye, suggesting that, because her brother gave her the portrait of Tomie, she was also possessed by her. Thus, the sister is the newest Tomie.

After watching Death Note The Movie 1 and 2 you should watch this one (if you miss L at least ^__^)

Ken'ichi Matsuyama reprises his role as L from the previous Death Note films. The film chronicles the final 23 days of L's life, as he solves one final case involving a bio-terrorist group that aims to wipe out much of humanity with a virus with one-hundred times the virulence of Ebola. He takes a boy he names Near, the sole survivor of its use in a village in Thailand, and an elementary schooler named Maki Nikaido under his wing. Dr. Nikaido, a research doctor, has received news and a sample of a deadly virus which affected a now destroyed village in Thailand. He discovers that the virus is one-hundred times stronger than Ebola. His seemingly trustworthy assistant outs herself to be the leader of the organization that created the virus, which is still incomplete due to the lack of an antidote. Dr. Nikaido, who had managed to create an antidote, refused to give her the antidote and preferred to be dead rather than endanger the world. Realizing that she could not get the antidote from the doctor, the assistant kills him, now convinced that his daughter Maki has a deciphered formula for the antidote. Maki, who had witnessed the murder, runs away in fear, eventually finding L's headquarters. Soon after she finds him, the bio-terrorist group tracks Maki down, forcing L, accompanied by Maki and Near, to runaway to a high-tech truck concealed as a sweets delivery truck dubbed "Angel Crepe" with the help of a Japanese-American FBI agent, Hideaki Suruga. L seeks the help of Dr. Nikaido's research partner to create a antidote for the virus. Eventually finding that Near contains the secret to the antidote, L manages to acquire a quantity of the antidote just as the bio-terrorist group is about to take an infected Maki to Washington in America to try to spread the virus. L manages to stop the plane before departing Thailand and giving all infected passengers, including the bio-terrorist, the antidote. Maki then tries to kill the bio-terrorist in revenge for the death of her father, but stops when L asks her if she really wants to do the deed. When she refuses, L goes to her and hugs her then says, "Good girl. I had faith in you." When Maki awakes in a hospital, she sees her teddy bear and finds that L recorded his voice on it for her. The movie conclude with L leaving Near at Wammys House and giving him his "real name" to Near and his toy robot which is shown in the main Death Note series. Shunji Fujimura also reprises his role as Watari, though the character dies early in the film as prior the events of The Last Name. The major characters of the main plot such as Light Yagami (Kira), Misa Amane, and Shinigami Ryuk all have brief cameos in the film.
